Start a Gay/STR8 Alliance @ UR School!
Change the World 4 the Better - Starting @ UR School! :)
- FOLLOW THE RULES
Start your GSA the same way you would any other group or club. Check your Student Handbook for the rules at your school.
- FIND A FACULTY ADVISOR
Find a teacher or staff member at school who you think would be supportive. This could also be a counselor, nurse, or sports coach.
- TELL THE ADMINISTRATION ABOUT UR PLANS
Tell an administrator what you’re doing right away. It can be very helpful to have someone on your side. They can work as liaisons on your behalf with other groups that might help you out. If you experience resistance about forming a GSA, remind administrators that forming a GSA club is protected under the Federal Equal Access Act. Your guidance counselor might know students who would be interested in joining the group. Ask for help!
- PICK A MEETING SPOT
Some people who might want to join your GSA might not be as brave as you yet, so pick a private place around school to meet.
- ADVERTISE
Figure out the best way to get others involved. Posters, flyers, whatever it takes! Keep your head up if your posters are defaced. Remember - LGBTQ kids probably feel a little safer, just by seeing the materials around school.
- HOLD UR MEETING
You may want to start out with a discussion about why people feel having this group is important. This is also a good time to set some basic ground rules! Never label anyone, this will encourage more allies to join the club. Also, no one ever complained about free pizza! Contact the Gay-Straight Alliance Network if you need more help or ideas!
